We have written about this band many times, but I finally had the pleasure of attending a Keep Shelly in Athens show this past Tuesday. It was in front of a small but enthusiastic crowd at a small venue here called DC Nine. I have never seen them live, and likely will not see them again for a long time. And to be honest, I forgot how truly special this band is, with their effortless blend of 90’s mello-drama chic and modern electronic taste. Powerful stuff.

Magnetic Fields album “Realism” was a real sleeper for me a couple of years ago. Especially track one, “You Must Be Out Of Your Mind”, and its pairing of monotone mellow-drama with lush cello and acoustic arrangements. The song always struck me as both poignant and funny, in a self-deprecating way only Magnetic Fields’ Stephin Merritt can be. Get cynical and enjoy…

Mansions on the Moon is coming through DC DC Nine tonight (April 18). Should be a killer show. These guys have aura and sentiment that takes me back to days listening to Jimmy Eat World and day dreaming almost exclusively about girls. If you can, you better be there. Dudes have MTV written all over them.
