Stardeath and White Dwarfs :: The Birth

July 14th, 2015 : Post by :: Categories
Stardeath and White Dwarfs - The Birth This past Sunday was my birthday – so naturally I went to a record store to celebrate (Dallas’ own Good Records if you’re curious). Over the speakers was “Keep Score” by Stardeath and White Dwarfs from their 2009 The Birth. How I managed to live the last 6 years without this record anywhere on my radar is a complete mystery. Stardeath blends 70s-fuzz and mellowed-out space rock from one track to the next in a way that almost seems effortless, making this record a must-have for your ever-expanding collection of psych-rock. And if the band sounds familiar, you might not be surprised to learn that the frontman has an uncle named Wayne Coyne (aka the frontman of The Flaming Lips). Be sure to also check out Stardeath’s even more psychedelic sophomore, Wastoid, out last year on Federal Prism records.

Braids :: Deep In The Iris

Braids

I caught the final moments of a live recording on Studio 360 while driving around on a Saturday afternoon. When I got to my destination, instead of turning off and exiting the car as I tend to do, I had to stay for the rest of the performance. I had to find out who the artist was. Turns out it was Braids, performing “Warm Like Summer” from their latest album Deep In The Iris. The blend of downtempo-jazz percussion, sparkling piano, and the beautifully haunting vocals and lyrics of leading-lady Raphaelle Standell-Preston creates a truly stunning sophomore release from this Montreal-based trio. Be sure to grab a copy for yourself from the group’s Bandcamp, or directly from Arbutus Records.
