Another gem from Austin TX! The once solo efforts of Martin Crane has bloomed into a 3-piece live act, with Crane’s lyrically creative, acoustical & piano-driven songs flourishing in Brazos‘ first LP Phosphorescent Blues. The LP’s ruby is definitely “The Observer,” Crane’s musical vision of mid-century poet Adrienne Rich’s The Observer. This album evokes a strong feeling of bittersweet nostalgia for me, personally.
When Josh Halpern isn’t paradiddlin’ around the drumkit for Marmalakes, you can find him keepin’ the beat for Final Exam, another killer ATX 3-piece, set to release their self-titled LP November 10th. The LP’s loaded with jammy, 90s-esque altrock goodness. Stream it here & be sure to check out the release show November 10th with Little Lo & The Eastern Sea @Cheer Up Charlie’s, Austin TX.
For those of you keeping up, newdust went to Fun Fun Fun Fest. As a last hurrah for the festival here is a 2010 recap video made by the folks over at Fun Fun Fun. See ya next year!
You know how some things just aren’t as great as you thought they’d be once you see them in person?(Like the White House or that guy you met on JDate.) Some things are better left alone to avoid disappointment, but Yelle is not one of them. The eccentric trio that is Yelle took the stage at Austin’s Fun Fun Fun Fest this weekend and put on an incredible show that almost made up for the fact Devo had to cancel at the last minute… almost. Despite the fact that festival-goers were exhausted from spending the last 72 hours going to shows, drinking excessive amounts of Tecate tall boys and developing a serious case of black lung thanks to the dusty park grounds, once Yelle took the stage, the entire crowd caught their second wind and danced their asses off.
Exhaustion was no match for this French electro-pop band whose beats left even the hippest hipster no choice but to do engage in some serious Jersey Shore fist-pumping. Yelle put on an incredible show that left us smiling (and sweaty) as we made our way out of the park. Until next year, Fun Fun Fun…

Newdust and co. had the pleasure of going to Austin, Texas this past weekend for Fun Fun Fun Fest. The festival lived up to it’s namesake. Some highlights were; “chillin” with Devin the Dude, watching Ariel Pink bring the rock (while wearing a dress), jamming to Toro y Moi who has now gone completely Innervisions on us, getting swooned by both Best Coast and Cults, and the laser-smoke-dance-tacular that was Delorean. Some great new discoveries were Peelander-Z (atomic punk rock for all ages) and Deakin (Animal Collective) who at times seemed meandering but mostly delivered ambient jams remeniscent of an impending desert thunderstorm. If you get a chance to go next year, please do, you won’t regret it.
We will have a few more posts reviewing artists at FFF Fest. Stay tuned…
