Shoegaze hadn’t found its way into my cochleas in quite some time. When it finally graced my presence once more, it was in the form of Feather Bed‘s second song to reach the light of day, and I was not disappointed. In true droned-out fashion, “Airbrushed” will have you lost in your head as a soft, lonely voice leads you onward, accompanied by a lone synthline & muffled kick drum. Marching forward, you almost don’t even notice the gradual buildup in melody & harmonies. Keep an ear out for their first full-length, The Skeletal System, releasing in 2013.

Fresh from the womb of Brooklyn comes People Get Ready, and they’re debut single is definitely something to get stoked about. Inspired by Cindy Sherman’s Untitled Film Stills, this song is best described by how lead singer Steven Reker describes Sherman’s Stills: it feels livable. “Windy Cindy” is a bright, jangly, poppy track that begs you to move around the room right from the opening riff. Definitely be on the look out for People Get Ready’s debut album that hits the streets October 23rd.

Alex Wong has had his creative hands in the works of many musical endeavors over the last decade. He’s been producing, mixing, arranging, recording, engineering, & even singing in over a dozen albums & soundtracks. I’m a big fan of The Paper Raincoat, a charming folk dream-pop musical experience, and the brainchild of Alex & Amber Rubarth, an artist he’s worked with in the past. Here’s a live recording of “Brooklyn Blurs”, off their debut self-titled, from the Luxury Wafers Sessions .

Foamy Skies is as fresh as it gets, reigning from Warsaw, Poland with a lo-fi surf reminiscent of Beach Fossils and Real Estate. Recorded in their home studio, “Clocks” is right on time for mid-summer. Swing by their bandcamp page to hear the rest of their debut EP, Asperatus.

Chicago-based electronic composer Jordan Parker (also known as Kodiak Kids), combines the fuzzy layers of chillwave and the heavy beats of electro-house to create his new side project Redwood. The result is pretty satisfying. Check out his debut, Swim Fan EP, below and swing by his Bandcamp to download it for free.

Fresh from the interwebs comes Tropic of Pisces, the new project from Mathew Scheiner (better known as the guitar player of Oberhofer). His single “Symmetry” off his debut EP is warm, shimmering troppop just in time for summer. Check it out for yourself and keep an eye out for some NYC show coming up in July.
