New track from DC mainstays, Imperial China. The song is a self described powder keg that rips you through two minutes fifty of post-punk bliss. The band sounds huge, with harmonic guitars amplifying the growling utterances of vocalist Brian Porter. The boys have a new album,”How We Connect”, out on January 28 through DC’s own Sockets Records. And if that isn’t enough homegrown goodness, Imperial China is playing with a few other bands from Sockets at the Black Cat DC on that same day, Saturday January 28. Be there kiddos, and enjoy!

So as you may or may not know newdust and friends are throwing a show this Saturday at DC9. Details and RSVP here. Though we are excited about all the bands, we are particularly stoked about Rites. The band is on the east coast leg of their tour and we were lucky enough to have em stop by DC9 this Saturday. Their music has the feeling of Beck (layers of guitar and bass heavy drums) and the effortlessly hip sensibility of french pop. Listen to my favorite “Unlikely Rare”, get the rest of their EP here and we’ll see you at the show!

Since first hearing Painted Face, comprised of singer-songwriter Allie Alvarado, I’ve held her music very close to my heart. Listening to her music is like watching notes bloom into a fairytale of effortless melodies. Her voice emanates a compassion that brings you into her world. It leaves your imagination running wild through electronic pop beats that you thought could only exist in space. Originally from DC, she moved to Brooklyn, NY and became a part of the eclectic music scene when she joined the band Blood Lines and Telepathe. Realizing she wanted to pursue her own musical destiny, she moved back to DC and started Painted Face. Her debut EP titled Undreamt was produced by Alvin Risk and herself, which you can listen to here. My favorite song on the EP is “Girls in Love.” It’s a song that weighs heavy on the heart through the lyrical and musical composition. It made me think of the myriad of situations that everyone’s soul has gone through with love. The lyric that resonates with me the most is “what will it take to get the point across.” I’m left with wanting to hear more of what Painted Face has in store for us.
For those of you who don’t already know Fergus & Geronimo get ready. These guys hail from Denton, Texas and blend the right amount of punchy Motown pop with fuzzy lo-fi punk. As you may know F&G is playing in DC at Velvet Lounge on August 17th w/ newdust bros Long Walks on the Beach and Archivists. Last I heard the band is releasing an EP very soon with Hardly Art. Until then enjoy the Yours Truly video for the soulful B-side “Powerful Lovin” (newdust fave), “Blind Muslim Girl” (buy it here) and “Girls With English Accents”. See you at the show!
