When Josh Halpern isn’t paradiddlin’ around the drumkit for Marmalakes, you can find him keepin’ the beat for Final Exam, another killer ATX 3-piece, set to release their self-titled LP November 10th. The LP’s loaded with jammy, 90s-esque altrock goodness. Stream it here & be sure to check out the release show November 10th with Little Lo & The Eastern Sea @Cheer Up Charlie’s, Austin TX.
Here’s a sweet little jam from up-and-coming grunge rock prodigy Hobey Kuhn, aka Resident Scout. This guy’s in the wrong decade, but I don’t say that disrespectfully in the slightest. His debut album, My Greatest Sympathies, is made up of all the things I yearned to hear during the age of alt-grunge rock, back when Pearl Jam and Foo Fighters reigned supreme. Kuhn’s resurrection of the grunge is highly infectious. Here’s “Garden.”
The story behind the origin of Virgina locals River James is something that’s almost too picturesque to be factual: after hours of bro-bonding and soul-searching during a leisurely canoe trip down the James River, these four VA lads decided to tell their story through song and thus formed a band appropriately titled after its birthplace. The resulting self-titled EP is proof that their story is one worth hearing, with four tracks that run the gamut of emotion from deeply personal to playfully poppy. Something that definitely shines through is the organic electricity that can only truly be felt thru live performance, which is exactly how this album was recorded. With great bass and guitar work, warm and inviting vocals from Vince Scheuerman (formerly of Army Of Me), and the drumming of none other than Jacob Marshall (formerly of MAE, a band that will always have a special place in my heart), this is truly an excellent debut so give it a listen.

Here’s some fantastic psych-alt folk rock to get you through the rest of the week: In Tall Buildings‘ (aka Erik Hall) latest self-titled album, with a damn fine live performance of “The Way To A Monster’s Lair” recorded by Giant System Chicago. Also, here’s the album’s recording of the tune, along with track 7, “Suitor.” Grab the LP or CD here and be sure to check them out on March 11th at Denton TX’s 35 Conferette Music Festival.

Wildlife’s 1st full length, Strike Hard, Young Diamond, due out November 16, is the most fun I’ve had listening to an album in quite some time. Great lyrics, enticing riffs, exciting melodies…This is their baby for sure, a debut to be proud of. From start to finish, Strike Hard, Young Diamond will hold you close & never let you down. Here’s track 1 off the album, and you can hop over here to listen/download tracks 2 & 3.

It’s an electronic world out there my friends. Feel free to quote me on that. And it’s tough to find an electronic artist worth shedding light on in such a world as this. Slandercat, however, has an extremely organic feel that my cochleas find very refreshing. Electronic? Yes, but not in the ever popular beach-pop, chill-wave, chill-pop, beach-wave way that, quite frankly, I’ve had almost all that I can take of. Pick up their EP Blood of a Broom Tree for free on bandcamp.

This is it folks. The first official iPhone 4 music video. Director Marty Martin, with the help of musician Steve Failows (aka Flakjakt), collaborated over a period of less than a week to create it. In 2 days Failows wrote a new track specifically for this video and they loosely conceptualized for those 2 days in an effort to be first out of the gates with an iPhone 4 music vid. Great video, and a fantastic song! Download it on bandcamp.
