Hypermagic – “Hey Hey Sunshine” video + “Red Lion”

Here on Newdust, we’re no strangers to Hypermagic’s blissful and surreal, ambient, downtempo tracks. This guy hasn’t released anything I haven’t liked, and his latest EP Hey Hey Sunshine is no exception. Here’s a video for the title track, along with track 2, “Red Lion.”

Dust On The Breakers – “Charred Metropolis”

Dust On The Breakers is an ever-changing musical collective out of Denver, CO. The revolving group adapts itself with every lineup, every live show, every band photo to what is needed at the moment; be that a thoughtful melody, a forlorn love song, or a raucous triumphant renewal. “Charred Metropolis” is track one off their new ep American Reclamation; it’s a dark and lonely tune with haunting melodies and memorable guitar lines, paving the way for a well-crafted debut ep.

Hypermagic – “Window Rat Sundae”

Here at Newdust we’re big fans of the ambient & downtempo genres. A while back we did a post on Hypermagic’s self-titled 3-track ep. With his latest, Tangerine Scene, Hypermagic has done it again with another well-crafted & polished 3-track ep of downtempo, shoegazy goodness. Here’s my favorite, “Window Rat Sundae.”

Casino Versus Japan

It’s been awhile since we’ve had a post in the realm of ambient music, so here’s a dusty one for you. This is the ‘98 debut album of Erik Kowalski (aka Casino Versus Japan). At 22 tracks (over an hour of total play time), the album is broken into four main movements, each one different from the one before it. Sometimes it leans more towards instrumental shoegaze, and at other times it’s full-blown ambiance in the key of Brian Eno. For fans of the genre, you need to listen to this album all the way through to fully appreciate it. And for those who are new to the genre, I can’t think of a more perfect introduction to ambient music. The album was re-released digitally this past January, and you can get your copy at Boomkat or Amazon.

Blithe Field / Laments – Football

I think Ohio might be my new favorite source for undiscovered indie talent. Especially in the form of ambient-pop and IDM. Here’s another one from Athens, Ohio’s own, our good friend Spencer Radcliffe, aka Blithe Field, once again drenched with fuzzy nostalgia and organic electronica (organica?). This split single, appropriately titled Football, with Laments and Blithe Field musically personifying the spirit of America’s greatest past time, is just another example of how the rural Ohio music scene can do no wrong. Download it for free here. And if you missed them a few weeks back, check out our Blithe Field interview here and our review of Beautiful Wave ‘74 here.

Hypermagic

blank

Hypermagic blends the ambience & shoegaze genres with lush downtempo melodies to deliver some pretty mesmerizing tunes. His music has been described as ‘a clandestine indulgence in pure melody, nostalgia, simplicity and drunken bliss.’ Well put. If you’ve got a decent pair of headphones, plug them in before listening. Crank it up and close your eyes.

Working For A Nuclear Free City – Businessmen & Ghosts

In light of my favorite TV show’s return last night, AMC’s Breaking Bad, here’s a couple songs from a band featured on its pilot episode: Manchester, England’s foursome Working For A Nuclear Free City. The song, “Dead Fingers Talking” played during the first of many meth cooking scenes (***) in the series, and is track 3 on their 29-track album Businessmen & Ghosts. I love this album from start to finish. It’s got so many different sounds– straight up bluesy rock ‘n roll tracks mixed in with drony, distorted shoegaze ones… Definitely an album worth picking up! I paired “Dead Fingers Talking” with “Apron Strings” to show the diversity of the album’s sounds.

Youth Pictures of Florence Henderson

A Norwegian ambient/post-rock/orchpop band formed north of the Arctic Circle sings in English and grabs its name from Carol Brady. Took a second to wrap my head around that one.  But with just a couple listens it became somehow less odd. Not completely not odd. But less odd.  Having cut my post-rock teeth on the flawless, stunning, three-act-play-style songs of Ágætis byrjun, biting into the more free form or acid jazz-style type bands falling somewhere in the neighborhood of the genre has been at the same time challenging and appealing. The tracks already out from YPOFH’s upcoming self-titled double record appear to be quite a nice bridge the gap piece between the rise-climax-dénoument of Explosions in the Sky and the circuit-bent, god-knows-what-might-happen style of the Benevento/Russo Duo.

Take To Sit Down or to Follow, So I Follow. At times it’s soaring and prototypical, though on the harder end, post-rock. Then it’s just a touch like Bloc Party got its hands on it with a skosh of distant vocals during the break à la Kaki King.

It’s out officially on March 1.  I’m impressed thus far.
