Artist Interview: We Are Scientists

Newdust has been big fans of We Are Scientists since their debut album With Love and Squalor came out back in 2005.  Keith (vox & guitar) took the time to answer a few quick questions about the tour and what We Are Scientists are up to.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Artist: We Are Scientists
Album: Barbara
Song: Rules Don’t Stop.mp3

Newdust: So how is the tour going so far?

“Rules Don’t Stop”

“Inaction”

“After Hours”

WAS Keith: Well… day one was in Boston.  We had the trailer hitch stolen off of our van, and we were an hour late to sound check.  So I’d say its a smashing success.  We bought margarita mix and tequila as well.  Seriously though, this tour is great because we are getting to tour with some of our best friends from Brooklyn in Lightspeed Champion and Bad Girlfriend.
ND: How many places are you from?  According to your press kit you are “New York-based Californians” and you have an “adopted homeland in England”.
WAS: Um… I had no idea our press kit said that.  We are just from one place… and that is New York.  We did though meet in California back in college, and briefly sublet an apartment in the UK.
ND: How did you end up writing a song for the British World Cup team?
WAS: We got into “soccer” while living the UK.  Why do you care?  Americans don’t like soccer!
ND: Well I live in DC and…
WAS: You spend too much time with all the ambassadors.  (Keith called me out.  I do in fact spend most of my time hanging with ambassadors, foreign dignitaries… and other social elites) American don’t like soccer.  Anywhere you would go in England, within 10 feet of a TV there would be 50 people crammed near it.  Crazy…
ND: Give us a few bands that newdust readers have to check out?
WAS: Oh man… Well, Two Door Cinema Club.  This band called Yuck, not sure if it is with an exclamation point or not but their name rules!  Also, 2/3 of this band called Oxford Collapse started a band called Skiing.  Check em out!

Thanks Keith for catching up with us!  Be sure get the new album Barbara out now.

ATTN DC: We Are Scientists is playing Friday June 16th (tomorrow) at the Black Cat.  Be there!

Artist Interview: Hooray for Earth

A few months ago we posted about Hooray for Earth and their new EP Momo. We have been spinning their single “Surrounded by Your Friends” ever since.  I got a chance to catch up with Noel from Hooray for Earth a few weeks ago to answer a few quick questions.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Artist: Hooray For Earth
Album: Momo EP
Song: Surrounded By Your Friends.mp3

Newdust: So tell me about Hooray for Earth and how it started?

FORM by Hooray For Earth from Johnny Woods on Vimeo.

HFE: The band started in Boston around 2005.  Chris and I have been bands since we were a freshman in high school.  We decided to record and stuff and that eventually became Hooray for Earth.  That feels like a long time ago.  Those early days we kind of lived off the grid.  We eventually moved to NYC where we recorded Momo last November.
ND: So you must be excited about this tour?  Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Surfer Blood.  Those are two great and exciting acts.
HFE: Who knows how it happened?  Pains shares some of the same members as a band called the Depreciation Guild (readers check em out) which we have played with a few times.  It was around the same time we got on this tour that we were picked up by Dovecote Records.  We are pretty excited about it.  Surfer Blood was added later on.
ND: How did you arrive at your current sound, and how does a typical HFE song happen?
HFE: I write and record everything and then I bring it to the band.  It varies though, sometimes it sounds almost exactly how I recorded the demo and sometimes it sounds different.  It all depends on the song.
ND: What is your inspiration?  I feel like your music is very ethereal and subtle, but the lyrics are very straightforward and literal.
HFE: Lyrics… well I have no method.  Its definitely a stream of consciousness thing.  I think about it a lot but I am not sure how it happens.  I really let the lyrics go… I let the melody impact the lyrics.
ND: Give us a band that newdust readers have to check out?
HFE: Oh No Ono, I found them last Spring.  Their last record is called Eggs.  Crazy chord changes and melodies.  The production is massive and intricate.

ATTN DC: As you know Hooray for Earth is on tour with The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Surfer Blood.  They will be playing at Black Cat  on Wednesday June 16th and it is sold out so you better scalp or pray or steal, but you better be there.

The Ruby Suns and Toro y Moi – DC Show Review

Wednesday brought The Ruby Suns and Toro y Moi to The Black Cat Backstage.

My only previous experience with the Backstage having been a screamo mess which I peeked in on while at The Black Cat for non-concert purposes (but definitely for pinball purposes), I was interested to see how the whole thing would go… I was pretty impressed.

I neglected to check out Toro y Moi (whose real name is Chaz and who almost smiled once during his set) before the show, largely because I was too busy continuing to be obsessed with the Fight Softly record that The Ruby Suns are out supporting. Having not heard a thing of his before, I enjoyed most of it. I have an inexplicable soft spot for solo musicians who loop instruments and, particularly, vocals for self-harmonizing and Chaz fits the bill more than nicely. (We were too far away for me to gawk nerdily at his gear setup, so I remain curious what he was using to pull it all off.) I was impressed with the breadth of genres he spanned. He stuck mostly in the synthy, head-bobby, steady rhythm pop neighborhood but ventured into hip-hop and casually into techno and then, to close hit set the odd choice of a strummy-strummy electric guitar song that most of the audience tuned out. Aside: A kind gentleman felt it necessary to, at one point–I believe the term is ‘back it up,’ right onto my exposed toes and then into my receptive arms. It was very cute.

A breather at set break and a bourbon prefaced The Ruby Suns, who pretty much thrilled the hell out of me.

Most of the set came off of Fight Softly, with which I have been mostly enthralled since it hit my speakers a few weeks ago. I recall specifically that we were treated to Mingus and Pike, Cranberry, Haunted House, Dusty FruitTwo Humans and, my personal favorite from the record, Closet Astrologer. Though it was Mingus and Pike that I sung to myself for my entire trip home. I questioned how the band would translate from the studio to the stage. Broken Social Scene makes sounds like The Ruby Suns do but with 410 more musicians. It works. It works nicely. The highly-layered, drum-centric songs went off largely without a hitch. The ping-ponging stereo samples at the start of Dusty Fruit pinged and ponged across the crowded room. The ascending oohs and aahs that form the backbone of Two Humans oohed and aahed in the same style that’s had me practicing my falsetto since I first heard the song. The Ruby Suns are a band who put on a thoroughly enjoyable show. Everything from the highly complex album is there. Every voice, every I-got-a-saw-and-hit-it-with-a-wisk sound. They sit on the edge of overdoing it. But just on the edge. That’s part of their magic.

In a related fashion, I am absolutely loving that all the kids whose parents played them Graceland through their entire youth are now making music. It’s my favorite non-Jazz album of all time. And I get to hear its influence all over music these days. These guys definitely grew up on this album and Mr. Simon comes out in spades. It’s the choirs of backup singers; it’s the giant, bassy drums; it’s the hand claps, the use of vocals as more than a way to spit out some words; it’s the genre-in-a-blender mentality that is present in so much great music.

The Ruby Suns haven’t created a Graceland-quality album, but that’s a pretty damn tall order. Do they make really good music and put on a kickass show? You bet. Head to see them and pick up the LP. It sounds fantastic.
