Freaks and Geeks and Heatwave – “Groove Line”

My favorite show of all time is without a doubt Paul Feig & Judd Apatow’s Freaks and Geeks (1999), a TV show about two unique groups of teenagers dealing with life in high school during the 80’s. Here’s a great scene from the last episode (ep18-”Discos and Dungeons”), featuring a disco dance competition, a good ol’ game of Dungeons and Dragons, and Heatwave’s 1978 single, “Groove Line.” The 2nd video shows Heatwave doin’ what they do best: Bringin’ the funk!

Rubies – Stand in a Line

I literally just discovered Rubies while fumbling around Whitest Boy Alive’s myspace page and had to share them with you. The song below is called “Stand in a Line”, originally released on Explode from the Center in the UK back in March of last year. Turns out they are releasing this album in the US tomorrow, and are having an album release dance party in Sacremento, California at the Rickshaw Stop with Windsurf, Little Wings, and DJ Safety Scissors. I am extremely jealous of anyone who’s lucky enough to be there.

The Whitest Boy Alive – Rules

whitecover
From folk-pop to disco-jazz: Erlend Øye can do no wrong with The Whitest Boy Alive’s second full-length album Rules.
You may have first heard Erlend with Eirik Glambek Bøe as Kings of Convenience. For the last three years, Erlend has lead his disco-esque side project The Whitest Boy Alive. Their first album, Dreams, was released a little less than three years ago (Service 2006). Since then they’ve polished and perfected their sound, and switched labels for their newest release, Rules (Bubbles 2009). If you enjoyed Dreams’ stripped down sound, with its clean guitar tones and simple, dancy drum beats, there’s no doubt you’ll love Rules. The tightness of the trio’s guitar & bass riffs, with the simple, yet effective drum beats that gave Dreams its solid groove is still present in their latest release, and with the addition of a Rhodes piano, Øye and Co. have released a solid follow up.
