Model – Minuit

Model Minuit

What better way to start off the final year of our glorious, short-lived human existence then with a killer glitch-house track? “Minuit,” off Model’s 2nd single, samples artists from Ed Banger Records, along with acts like Crystal Castles & Danger to pull off a sweet little disco dance tune worthy of these pre-apocalyptic times. Check out more tunage here.

Twin Sister – In Heaven (album review)

Twin Sister In Heaven (album review)

It’s no surprise that I’m a huge fan of Twin Sister’s latest album In Heaven, released last week on Domino Records. Lead singer Andrea Estella still delivers that signature breathy vocal work throughout the majority of the album, and this time around guitar player Eric Cardona adds his voice to the mix in both “Stop”, and “Eastern Green”. Compared to their previous EP, In Heaven has a few tracks that vary from their usual 70s disco-pop sound. For example there’s a track that could almost pass for a James Bond theme (“Spain”), and a track that to me is an obvious nod to Steely Dan – which may or may not have been deliberate (“Gene Campi”). And this is why I’m always intrigued by what Twin Sister is doing, and what they’re going to do next. I have the utmost respect for these guys as musicians.

They aren’t a one trick pony, and their songwriting skills and musicianship continues to prove that this five-piece is the real deal. But at this point I’m just gushing, so you’ll have to check it out and see for yourself. Pick up the CD or LP at the Domino Records website, or you can stream the full album over at Stereogum.

Solar Bears – She Was Coloured In LP

Solar Bears‘ latest album She Was Coloured In is the perfect cross-section of a wide range of instrumental music, ranging from minimalism to disco-electronica without skipping a beat or losing continuity. I was instantly reminded of the soundtrack to the 1973 animated science fiction masterpiece Fantastic Planet, of which I was not surprised at all to see that Solar Bears actually used footage from the film for one of their music videos. This album is a really solid listen-through from start to finish, and if only I had listened a couple weeks earlier this album would have made it onto our Top 10 list without question. Also highly recommended if you’re a fan of Casino Versus Japan’s debut self-titled.

Toro Y Moi – Underneath The Pine

Toro Y Moi Underneath The Pine

Chaz Bundick (aka Toro Y Moi) has been a much buzzed about artist in the blogosphere ever since our ears first heard his debut release Causers Of This earlier this year. Along with Washed Out, he helped create the chillwave that conquered the airwaves time and time again last summer. Now he’s back at it again with his second full-length album, Underneath The Pine. It’s got that trademark sound that we’ve come to expect from him, only this time it’s done with

live instrumentation that provides a much more authentic and genuine sound. Check out the first single, “Still Sound,” and pickup your copy of the album when it hits the streets February 22nd.
