Check out this preview of DC native Aaron Thompson’s new EP “Vessel” (pre-order here), to be released on December 13th 2011. This sort of music is not usually in my wheel-house but I am loving the ambitious song writing and production level. I cannot wait to here more…
Very “cute” video for Kurt Vile’s track “Baby’s Arms”. Cheesy, but the sentiment is simple and romantic. Life is better in your… well you get the idea.
Snowmine’s debut full length Laminate Pet Animal has officially made my Best of 2011 list. Its got just about everything you could want out of an indie-pop record, so how could you not love it? The extremely catchy and addictive "Penny" is probably my favorite track, filled with Shins-reminiscent melodies and vocal work that reminds me of a well-known 70’s-era vocalist that I can’t quite put my finger on. In fact, and this is sort of a stretch, his vocal stylings in the fourth track “Danger In The Snow!” actually remind me of Gino Vannelli at times. Overall this is an album of greatly varied sounds, vibes, and genres that is definitely worth a listen. Swing by their Bandcamp page to purchase the digital, CD, and Vinyl versions of the album. Also check out the single “Nervous” below, which they offered as a free download back in February.
Adorable video by Montreal-via-Iowa outfit Little Scream’s “Red Hunting Jacket,” one of many standout track’s on the chamber-pop singer/songwriter’s debut, The Golden Record. Laurel Sprengelmeyer, the mastermind behind the project, released the album in April on Secretly Canadian, and has since gotten nothing but praise for her ability to seamlessly mesh folk, pop, and art rock. Check her out on tour this summer with The Antlers.
I discovered Woodpigeon after watching this really awesome recut of the Ferris Bueller’s Day Off Trailer edited to make it look like an indie film (definitely check that out by the way). The song playing in the background was “A Slight Return Home” off Woodpigeon’s album Songbook. So naturally I had to check these guys out and see what other gems I could find. That’s when I heard “Knock Knock” and decided it deserved a spot on my list of favorite indie folk songs.
Seriously, it’s been stuck in my head for days now.Swing by Woodpigeon’s website for more information on albums, tour dates, etc.

Fleet Foxes announce May 3rd as the release date of their highly anticipated second full-length album. We all remember where we were and what we were doing the first time we heard Mykonos, not to mention the instant love-fest we all shared over their self-titled debut album. The wait for new tracks is finally over! Check out the first single from their upcoming album, the title-track “Helplessness Blues,” a little something for us to salivate over while the countdown begins. For those of you in the Dallas area, get your tickets now for their May 11th performance at Palladium Ballroom.
So I’m having trouble deciding which is better: the song itself or the music video? Either way, it’s safe to say that Futurist’s latest single “Antihero” off their upcoming album War Is Yesterday is a song that is made up of just the right amount of toe-tapping rhythms and feel good vibes that’ll have you coming back for more. Plus that dual-guitar breakdown around the 2:10 mark is pure Steely Dan-ish, which fills me with all sorts of joy. If you’re in the NYC area and looking for something interesting to do instead of dinner and a movie, check out their Valentine’s Day performance at Cake Shop Records.
