Remember Lykke Li? The young Swedish babe is back with a sophomore album, Wounded Rhymes, set to be released in March through her own label, LL Recordings. She unveiled the first single of the LP, “I Follow Rivers”, a few days ago, and it is both surprising and charming as you would expect. Staying true to her eclectic pop/electro/folk style, Lykke Li matches her mysterious, vibrant voice to ethnic rhythms and sweet lyrics, creating a lovely and strangely appealing love song that doesn’t forget to be catchy. Watch out for her forthcoming album, and check out her previous work here.
Common Prayer’s latest video comes disguised as a day-in-the-life of front man Jason Sebastian Russo’s brother Jon. Off their debut album There Is A Mountain, “Of Saints” has just about everything you need for an instant folk classic, complete with Midlake-esque vocals and Wilco-like guitar jabs. Be on the lookout for their next album, which they plan to release before SXSW 2011.
Austin, TX has been spitting out some great folk artists onto the scene this past year (our good friends Marmalakes being one of them). Miles Kelley’s (aka Milezo) Ghostwalking EP serves as yet another fantastic example of the flourishing hazy-, dreamy-, folk-pop movement. The 10-track EP is loaded with catchy little folk tunes and exceptional ambient tracks that pull it all together for a great listen from start to finish.
He’s also got an excellent ambient, noise-track EP, Forêt (remix.ep), for your listening/downloading pleasure on his bandcamp page.

I will never grow tired of classic folk tunes, the kind that’s purpose is to tell stories, with simple melodies and heartfelt lyrics. Erland & The Carnival brings us the perfect blend of folk, pop, and psychedelia. “Trouble in Mind,” off their UK released self-titled EP, was loosely started as a blues track collected by one of the great field collectors of folk music of the 20th century, Alan Lomax. They developed their own melody and lyrics, with inspired words from the early 20th century novel by Daphne Du Maureir, Rebecca.

Newdust pals Lightfoot have been very busy recording and collaborating. The band just self-released their EP People (Who Throw Kisses) Are Hopelessly Lazy. You can get the EP here. Check out the folk/country jam “Beaster”. These songs are sad and filled with heartbreak but I hear Lightfoot is turning the page on that. The band is headed to the studio soon with the intent of taking their sound in a new direction. So… stay tuned kids!
Also, check out their interesting collaboration and remix with Blithe Field on the track “Will Uncoil When”. Can’t wait to hear more guys. Keep it up!

The vibe at 619 Pearl St. on July 25th could not have been more laid back or chill (as was perfectly stated on Josh’s t-shirt). We all hung out in the backyard sipping on our ice cold beers and munching on hot dogs until a heavy downpour brought us indoors. And then there was music. Our friends Marmalakes & Mont Lyons both put on fantastic shows! Shout out to all those who came to hang out with us to mark our first year in the blogosphere! Cheers!
PS: If anyone has more video or pictures of the event let me know and I will post it.
I’m really diggin’ this EP. Wonder Winds is Marmalakes first release and it’s jam packed with lively & catchy folk-pop tunes. From track 1 to the last, the EP grabs your attention and keeps it warm and snug throughout its short and sweet 23 minute run time. Hear the entire EP here, then head over to the Cactus Cafe in Austin on July 9th to check out their EP release show. Here’s my favorite off the EP, “Ode To Johnnie Martin.”
