Emil & Friends – Downed Economy 7″

Downed Economy 7 Inch

I have a sweet 7 inch recommendation for everyone.  The funky Sly and The Family Stone-esque tunes of Emil & Friends!  I don’t really know much about the band, but their music is really easy to love.  The sweet beats are only enhanced by the catchy vocals and tongue-in-lyrics about making rent and making tapes.  The single was released last September and you can get it in the UK at Transparent (I think it is sold out but free for download) and in the US over at Leftist Nautical Antiques.  Enjoy!

Thanks to Landon of Fergus and Geronimo (also on Transparent and LNA) for the find!

Connect the Dots (La La Lala) – Connect the Dots

I wanted to drop a quick afternoon post from DC-land.  This weekend at the Done and Done festival I was bored between sets and playing on my phone.  There was all sorts of feedback and reverb going on and I was very annoyed.  I even considered going outside when suddenly the noise started turning into these looped, catchy, funky beats.  It was one of those moments when you look up to notice everyone nodding their heads and tapping their toes.  After their set I found out that these guys (2 bros and a laptop) have an average age of 18 years old.  Crazy… Anyways here is a quick and dirty demo of the dudes playing a song of their namesake.

ATTN DC: Connect the Dots is playing this Thursday April 15th at 7PM at Paper Sun w/ Untied States and Bubbling Well.

Lo-fi-fnk – Marchin’ In

So I am enduring the snowmeggedon here in DC area.  2 feet of snow in two days… not normal.  Anyways, some good came out of this blizzard because I discovered Lo-Fi-Fnk’s new single “Marchin In”.  It is catchy, funky, and Swedish.  What more could you ask for?  I don’t have many details about the single or whether there is a new LP coming soon.  I do know you can get more info about their 2006 release Boylife here.  Enjoy!

Freaks and Geeks and Heatwave – “Groove Line”

My favorite show of all time is without a doubt Paul Feig & Judd Apatow’s Freaks and Geeks (1999), a TV show about two unique groups of teenagers dealing with life in high school during the 80’s. Here’s a great scene from the last episode (ep18-”Discos and Dungeons”), featuring a disco dance competition, a good ol’ game of Dungeons and Dragons, and Heatwave’s 1978 single, “Groove Line.” The 2nd video shows Heatwave doin’ what they do best: Bringin’ the funk!

Funkadelic and Sleigh Bells

Thanks to the great blog Everybody Taste I discovered the band Sleigh Bells.  I was very skeptical at first and was originally drawn to the song because I recognized the Funkadelic sample of “Can You Get to That?”.  After about a minute in I was sold.  The song sucks you in, and gets better every time you listen to it.  This is a great band, and although “Ring Ring” is one of their more chill songs this band boasts bombastic beats that are only matched by the sheer amount of distortion used to produce their sound.  This fuzzy groove is complimented by the soft, cool and cutting vocals of the bands singer Alexis Krauss.  Supposedly they are releasing an EP soon, and you can track down various singles on iTunes, hypem, and your favorite mp3 blogs.  Enjoy!

PS:  Check out Sleigh Bells song “Crown on the Ground”.
