Smokey Robotic – “Blast Off” (video)

I listened to this song two nights ago after seeing Lindsay Lohan tweet it (full disclosure: I follow Lindsay Lohan), and it blew my mind. Everything about the video is oddly bizarre, yet oddly captivating. It begins with the camera panning the deck and passages of an abandoned ship. The footage is slightly reminiscent of those panning staircase scenes from Titanic, which is weird. A deep, montone voice repeats, “I’m gonna be the that ship that takes you up.”

Ultimately, you seep into the dream — or more aptly, nightmare — of a small, headdress-wearing boy. We follow him as he wanders through a foggy maze of poorly costumed, bloodied pirate-looking zombies. The deep voice gives way to a rapper: “I power my ship with women and hot sauce,” Smokey raps. Then come the strobe lights. This is bizarre. This is fantastic.

The New York Post reports that Smokey Robotic is co-managed by Lohan’s brother, Mike. Everything the LiLo family touches seems to turn to shit and/or meth, but LiLo’s bro has something interesting here. If you like Ghostland Observatory and similar electro-quirk, this is your shit. The Halloween-nature of the video — which was clearly intentional in light of its timed release — is an odd move, in part because it gives the video limited relevance past next Monday. But if you have doubts of Smokey’s talent or versatility, just check out past videos — including the the beautifully done, cartoon animated “S.R.” – on themes of peace, war, race, etc — all amid a choir of serene, gospel-like voices. A comparison of the two songs and videos suggests the group knows exactly how to meld music genres to create something appealing, intriguing and eclectic — even if oddly bizarre.

Women and hot sauce. Zombie-pirates and abandoned ships. Smokey Robotic leaves me thinking: What IS this? I don’t know, but I like it. REPLAY.

Theophilus London (Show Review at 930 Club)

Theophilus London (Show Review at 930 Club)

Theophilus London played a packed 930 Club this past Monday. I knew we were all in for a treat when the only instruments on stage were an electric guitar and wind-chimes. The show began, more rock n’ roll than Wu Tang. Piping in air horn and police sirens every chance they could get. The guitars were very heavy, especially in the pseudo-rock song “I Stand Alone”. The lights flashed red, white, and blue as TL shuffled across the stage, leather jacket and sequin shirt clad. My favorite track of the night was “Strange Love”. Full of ambient noise and chimes, a huge beat and most importantly, a chorus you can shout along to. The rambunctious crowd was also treated to a few new tracks off TL’s new mixtape. A fellow named Cousin Bryan came out and helped deliver a double time flow on “Big Spender”, a tune reminiscent of a dirty south Juvenile-esque rump shaker. TL closed the show big, though predictably with “Humdrum Town”, which has a great sample of newdust favorites Futurecop!. And despite running out of songs, TL kept partying. Spinning rap bangers for another 10 minutes, as the crowd danced away. It doesn’t matter if you are into rap/hip-hop or not, do yourself a favor and catch Theophilus London as soon as you can.

Theophilus London – “I Stand Alone” (video + show)

Check out this very surreal video from Theophilus London. He is by far doing some of the most interesting things in progressive hip-hop right now, both musically and aesthetically. With influences ranging from Blur to Wu-Tang Clan to Talking Heads it is really hard not to like him. If you are in DC check him out on October 3 at 930 Club. We will definitely be there nodding our heads and reviewing the show so check back soon for more.

Guts – And The Living is Easy

Guts And The Living is Easy

I couldn’t be happier with today’s find: “And The Living Easy” was love at first listening. Pretty unknown in the US, Guts is a former member of the French 1990’s hip-hop band Alliance Ethnik and a soul/funk/hip-hop/electronic music genius. His first album Le Bienheureux was released through WAX ON Records in 2007, followed by Freedom, an instrumental album released in 2009 through his own label Pura Vida. “And The Living Is Easy”, off the Le Bienheureux album, is sampled from Billy Stewart’s 1966 “Summertime“, which was itself one of the oh-so-many covers of Gershwin’s song.

Saying that this song rocked my world the instant I heard it wouldn’t do any justice to this funky-soul gem that was featured, by the way, in BBC’s show Skins. Listen, love, and check out more Guts here.
