This is one of those albums you can just lose yourself in. Berry Weight’s latest, Music For Imaginary Movies, is a fantastic head-first dive into some intense, beat-driven, dark & moody jazz tunes. AKA Apewok & Stab, they’ve been described as ‘a soulful electro-organic-space-jazz duo, harmonizing storybook-like melodies and cinematic atmospheres.’ I couldn’t have said it better if I tried. This album really draws you in right from the beginning, and never lets up. Here are my two favorites from the album.

Wow. That’s all I can say about Tindersticks‘ latest album Falling Down A Mountain. From track one onward, there’s never a dull moment in this album. It has a real rootsy, bluesy soul vibe to it, & Stuart Staples’ vocals and lyrics are powerful & heartfelt. My favorites are “Keep You Beautiful”, “Black Smoke”, & “No Place So Alone”. If you’ve got the time, give this album a solid listen. You’ll be glad you did.

The Soundcarriers are bringing back the pop-jazz infused psychedelic-folk sound of the 60’s and 70’s, and they do it in a big way with their latest release Harmonium. |
 |
 |
The Soundcarriers have taken the recipe books of David Axelrod and The United States of America and have successfully added hints of modern rock into Harmonium to create a hypnotic, funky, extremely trippy addition to the endangered genre. And Leonore Wheatley’s perfected breathy vocals are the icing on the cake. You can purchase the album in many different formats directly off the band’s website. And I would like to go on record as saying that the song below has one of the greatest intro build-ups of 2009, so be sure and crank it.

From folk-pop to disco-jazz: Erlend Øye can do no wrong with The Whitest Boy Alive’s second full-length album Rules. |
| You may have first heard Erlend with Eirik Glambek Bøe as Kings of Convenience. For the last three years, Erlend has lead his disco-esque side project The Whitest Boy Alive. Their first album, Dreams, was released a little less than three years ago (Service 2006). Since then they’ve polished and perfected their sound, and switched labels for their newest release, Rules (Bubbles 2009). If you enjoyed Dreams’ stripped down sound, with its clean guitar tones and simple, dancy drum beats, there’s no doubt you’ll love Rules. The tightness of the trio’s guitar & bass riffs, with the simple, yet effective drum beats that gave Dreams its solid groove is still present in their latest release, and with the addition of a Rhodes piano, Øye and Co. have released a solid follow up.
