| Patrick Lee is a musician and producer from Denver, Colorado. And, trust me, a gifted one. We learn from the succinct and a tad crazy bio on his website that he has always shown an overwhelming love for music, and he released his first record in 2000. He has been one busy guy since : The Last Thing is his 25th album, and a mixtape also came out earlier this year. On The Last Thing Patrick Lee offers some deliciously vintage tunes, mostly influenced by jazz, rock and blues. With a twist of modernity here and there, sometimes touches of hip-hop, sometimes hints of electronic music. “I Stand Before You” is a one-of-a-kind combo of a jazzy background, hip-hop beats and a surprising chipmunk-like voice sample. |
On the paper, this shouldn’t probably work. But you should definitely give it a listen or two because Patrick Lee knows how to work his magic and, hey, this happy tune is just what you need on a Sunday afternoon.

So what’s better than a couple of young, gifted and musically daring newcomers to pleasantly end the Summer and properly kick-start a new year? Maybe a brand new label full of young, gifted and musically daring newcomers. London-based Metamimetic Records was created a few months ago, in order to gather some of the oh-so-many talented yet unsigned artists from all over the world, and from all genres and styles. Among a growing range of highly noticeable electronic music-oriented artists, Sam Wilkes from California was one of the first to get signed to Metamimetic, through which he released his Booth EP. I have to say Sam Wilkes was, at first listen, quite a surprise, and a good one : I have rarely heard such a young man with this kind of mature sound and classical influences, from deep blues to the best of the motown, skilfully blended in with the most modern beats. His catchy, jazz-infused tunes, whenever you listen to them, hold this peculiar feeling of coming home : you might never have heard him before, but it’s just like you’ve known these songs forever.
|
Just give a listen to these two gems from Booth below to see what I mean, and if you happen to actually like it, grab the EP for free and show him some love here.

This is one of those albums you can just lose yourself in. Berry Weight’s latest, Music For Imaginary Movies, is a fantastic head-first dive into some intense, beat-driven, dark & moody jazz tunes. AKA Apewok & Stab, they’ve been described as ‘a soulful electro-organic-space-jazz duo, harmonizing storybook-like melodies and cinematic atmospheres.’ I couldn’t have said it better if I tried. This album really draws you in right from the beginning, and never lets up. Here are my two favorites from the album.

Wow. That’s all I can say about Tindersticks‘ latest album Falling Down A Mountain. From track one onward, there’s never a dull moment in this album. It has a real rootsy, bluesy soul vibe to it, & Stuart Staples’ vocals and lyrics are powerful & heartfelt. My favorites are “Keep You Beautiful”, “Black Smoke”, & “No Place So Alone”. If you’ve got the time, give this album a solid listen. You’ll be glad you did.

The Soundcarriers are bringing back the pop-jazz infused psychedelic-folk sound of the 60’s and 70’s, and they do it in a big way with their latest release Harmonium. |
 |
 |
The Soundcarriers have taken the recipe books of David Axelrod and The United States of America and have successfully added hints of modern rock into Harmonium to create a hypnotic, funky, extremely trippy addition to the endangered genre. And Leonore Wheatley’s perfected breathy vocals are the icing on the cake. You can purchase the album in many different formats directly off the band’s website. And I would like to go on record as saying that the song below has one of the greatest intro build-ups of 2009, so be sure and crank it.
