Coastal Cities – “Think Tank” (video)

“Think Tank” is the self-titled single from the debut release of indie-dance band Coastal Cities. Comprised of five 17 year olds who met in school detention during the summer of 2009, Coastal Cities encapsulates 80’s new wave with more of a nod to Foals than anything else. But comparatively speaking, Coastal Cities is bringing a more youthful spirit to the genre not just with their age but with the vibe of their tuneage. You gotta be in the right mood to listen to Foals, but I could listen to “Think Tank” just about any old time. Check out their debut EP on digital release December 5th.

Hosannas – When We Were Young (Video)

Hosannas When We Were Young (Video)

Another up-and-coming band to get excited about, folks! Hosannas (brothers Richard & Brandon Laws) offer an enticing blend of dark, new wave synth-pop & dirty folk rock. I love it! Check out their Bandcamp to hear their latest album Together, where you can find the tune for this video, “When We Were Young.” My favorites from the album are “John Pilgrim” & “Be Careful.” Keep an eye out for an upcoming e.p. release and a showcase at the SXSW festival in March!

Big Wave Riders

Big Wave Riders

Hailing from Helsinki, Finland, Big Wave Riders are poised to make a pretty big splash on the scene with their almost instantly likeable and relatable sound. With a mix of indie punk and 80’s new wave, their latest single “It’s Funny Things Aren’t Gonna Change” is pretty hard not to like.

Swing by their Soundcloud page to check out the rest of their songs and stay posted on the band’s future endeavors, which I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about.

Indochine – Miss Paramount

Indochine Miss Paramount

So I’m not exactly sure how I came across this band, but upon hearing them I knew they were destined to grace the homepage of Newdust. Unfortunately I have no clue what it is they are saying exactly, but that doesn’t make it any less rad as Josh would say. Originally formed in 1981, Indochine became one of the most successful new wave rock bands in France, with songs like L’Aventurier and Canary Bay. Of the albums that I skimmed through while deciding what song of theirs to post, “Miss Paramount” (off their ‘83 sophomore release Le Péril Jaune) was a clear winner with that easy-to-love surf rock guitar that I’m a complete sucker for.

Now if only Lara would be so kind as to translate this for me, I’d be good to go.

Hooray for Earth – True Loves

Hooray for Earth True Loves

Good news!  Hooray for Earth released their new single, “True Loves”.  It is by far my favorite HFE track to date.  The beat is heavy and the vocals are haunting.  Last I heard their first full length album is coming out on Dovecote Records in Spring of 2011.  Enjoy!

Tortoiseshell – “This Girl”

Tortoiseshell This Girl

It’s all about that fresh new wave 80s-pop sound these days. It doesn’t happen that often, but every now and then a new band gets it right. Tortoiseshell is one of these bands. They don’t just rip off the sound completely, as some bands of today have. Their debut single “This Girl” takes the sound and makes it their own, with a fantastically nostalgic bass line and smooth vocals with a catchy chorus. Grab it on vinyl here. Love the cover art!

Superhumanoids – Urgency

Superhumanoids Urgency

Urgency is Superhumanoids debut ep, and it’s been tickling my earbuds all week. I’m having trouble classifying their sound; they’ve got this Tears For Fears vibe for sure, but there’s definitely more to it than that. It’s new wave 80s in all the right places. Head over to their site to stream/download the entire ep for yourself. Pre-order Urgency on vinyl here.
