Elephant Parade has released “Grand Opening” as the first single off their second album Home, which surprisingly enough was recorded using nothing but a cheap computer microphone and freeware recording software. I’m impressed. And those of you attending SXSW this week, be sure and check them out at Stephen F’s bar on March 19th at midnight. From there they will launch the start of what they’re calling a “tiny bedroom music tour”, where they will be playing house shows across the states.

I’ve been saving this song for an Electric Saturday post, but I have yet to find a good song to pair up with such a standalone gem. So here it is. Jazica from Southampton just released their latest EP Cut Shapes featuring “Follow the Rhythm”, which was featured on Tom Robinson’s best of unsigned podcast, and has had numerous plays on BBC Six Music radio. You can stream the entire EP here.

I got an email the other day from David Beeman, mastermind behind the folk-pop quintet Old Lights. He was very pleased and very eager to share with us the brand new video by Cody Stokes for “Losing My Mind,” off their latest, Every Night Begins The Same (click to buy on iTunes). I really enjoyed this album, it’s got an awesome 60s-pop vibe to it. And here’s one of my faves from the album, “How Can I Get By.”

I don’t really need to say much about M.I.A. She is catchy, innovative and great for parties. Here is a new lo-fi track and video, which may or may not be on her upcoming release. Enjoy!

So I am enduring the snowmeggedon here in DC area. 2 feet of snow in two days… not normal. Anyways, some good came out of this blizzard because I discovered Lo-Fi-Fnk’s new single “Marchin In”. It is catchy, funky, and Swedish. What more could you ask for? I don’t have many details about the single or whether there is a new LP coming soon. I do know you can get more info about their 2006 release Boylife here. Enjoy!

So I am trying to get pumped to kick it off my weekend and I stumbled across the blog Sunset in Rear View. It is a pretty good site and I am grateful to them for reminding me of the joys of Ray LaMontagne. I was into his stuff during my early undergrad years as I was trying to romance freshmen girls in my dorm room, car, etc. This song put me in the kind of Van-Morrison-shot-of-whiskey mood. Enjoy!

I had an itch to check out Dayve Hawk’s (Memory Tapes) blog (We’re Tapes) yesterday and it turns out he just finished a remix of Tanlines‘ “Real Life”. Check it out!

A while back we did a post on The Seedy Seeds‘ “The Feeders.” Here’s an excellent live video of them performing “On The Subject Of Our Past Selves,” at The Green Building in Louisville, KY. They are the first of many bands to perform on the “Green Building Sessions.”
Over the holiday break in Texas I was hanging out with one of my buddies in Fergus & Geronimo telling tour stories. On one night of their tour last year they played with Florida’s Surfer Blood. I was skeptical at first when he was telling me about a Weezeresque/Lo-Fi/Rock group, as I should be. (Not to mention their name was Surfer Blood, which after becoming mildy obsessed with this band I now love.) Anyways… my skepticism was silenced 30 seconds into the single “Swim” and I was sold. To sweeten the deal I also posted this awesome remix of “Swim” by Allen Blickle of Baroness. Be sure and see them in DC on February 24th at DC9 and in Texas at SXSW. Enjoy…

The latest from Rafter, Animal Feelings, set to release April 13th on Asthmatic Kitty, sounds like it’s going to be awesome! It’s said to be full of “FM-ready pop gems playfully sabotaged by Rafter’s fearless mouth”; “a beat-busting ride into the inner-core of pop and R & B music.” I’m pretty excited about it. Here’s track 7, titled “Paper”. (WARNING: if your ears are easily offended, don’t listen to this song.)

I got an email the other day that read this: ‘In the 1960s, the government of Poland attempted to secretly join the so-called “Star Wars” programme. Alone in this endeavor, however and with confidence in short supply, it failed to live up to the standards set by the superpowers of the time. Though it did manage to send three astronauts into space. “The Car Is on Fire” team was to fulfill a project known by the code-name “Ombarrops!”. Their research was assigned to Soma station, headed by John McEntire, well-known for his participation in such expeditions as “Tortoise“, “The Sea and Cake” or “Stereolab“. Unfortunately, on the way back home, their capsule ran out of fuel, leaving them all alone in the abyss of endless space until this day. Their country abandoned them a long time ago, so they’ve decided to send this message into the ether, hoping to be saved someday. But the most important are the results of their scientific research, which can be found below. Please make a good use of it:’
