As a native Portlander, I have a proclivity to its music scene; it’s in my blood, and nothing excites me more than sharing some of the amazing tunes that are coming out of my fair city with all of you. That being said, here is “Trying To Reach You,” the second single off avant-pop threesome Nurses’ September 20 release, Dracula. The track demonstrates the band’s knack for meshing funk, psychedelics, rhythm and haunting vocal layers, while holding on to pop dynamics. Just like with the trio’s 2009 release, Apple’s Acre, I am giddy to get my hands on this LP.

A few months ago I saw Sundress in concert on 4/20, which was quite fitting cause these guys definitely took me on a trip (~~~). This promising Denton act put on a killer show and filled the room with their sonic atmospheres and enveloping psychedelia, making it a pretty hard act to follow for the headlining Freelance Whales. Several months later I finally get my hands on their EP this past weekend while perusing Denton’s Mad World Records, and although I was a bit skeptical as to whether the recorded tracks could pull off the vibe of their live performance, this EP captures the band’s energy and soundscapes with near perfect precision.

Great new video for Gardens & Villa’s latest single, Spacetime landed in my inbox a few days ago. Director David South paired up the funky 70s pop inspired track nicely with a well-edited melange of campy psychedelic sci-fi images from the same era. This tune can be found on the band’s self-titled debut via Secretly Canadian, which can be purchased here.
First off Happy Birthday to Newdust’s own Quentin, who happens to be my twin brother (yep, that would make it my birthday as well). Party time. Anyway, so I’ve been on this psychedelic throwback kick lately ever since I heard Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s debut a couple weeks ago, and I was lucky enough to stumble across another band that might as well have stepped straight out of a time capsule. Connecticut trio The Stepkids release their debut self-titled on Stones Throw Records September 27th.
Check out their video for “Wonderfox” and listen to their first single “Shadows On Behalf.” And if you’re in the Brooklyn area, you can see them live tonight at Fort Greene Park.

Still freshly pressed from it’s release date on June 21st, I hear something new every time I listen to Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s self-titled debut. This collection of gems is so surprisingly out of left field; swirling with so much 60’s-infused psychedelia that I’m almost convinced that these guys actually walked straight out of a time capsule. “Thought Ballune” is by far my favorite track from the release, and I cant seem to get it out of my head. Seriously, it’s on permanent replay in my brain.

Few bands these days can take the recycled sounds of the 60s psychedelic movement and turn it into something truly refreshing and unique. Dumbo Gets Mad does just that, creating a futuristic vintage sound loaded with psychelicious noises and melodies that is highly addicting. DGM is a one-man project (with a little help from his girlfriend who sings on some tracks) whose experimentation with old-fashioned rigs like analog synthesizers
and tape machines gave birth to his first full-length release, Elephants At The Door. Here are my two favorites from the album:
If you look close enough, you can actually see the chill waves in Neon Indian’s latest psychedelic music video for “Mind, Drips” of his much loved and listened to Psychic Chasms. Directed by electronics wizards Lars Larsen and Edward Leckie, the video achieves it’s epicness using a device invented by the wizards themselves called the LZX Visionary, which is an analog video synthesizer that manipulates images in the same way an audio synthesizer does for sound. Daaaaaanng. And don’t forget, those of you in the Dallas area, Neon Indian is opening for Flaming Lips at the Palladium Ballroom on February 3rd. So mark your calendars accordingly.
