The State Department – Engender Me

The State Department is rock n’ roll.  I have seen them play twice at a couple of DC house shows and the band was catchy, bombastic, and drunk as hell.  Check out the song “Engender Me”.  It sounds like what would happen if James Brown, David Byrne, and Tom Verlaine (Television) all had a love child.  That soulful punk bastard would be The State Department.  Mothers… guard your children.

Attn DC: Check out The State Department on August 13th at Rock n’ Roll Hotel.

White Arrows – “Coming or Going”

“Coming or Going” is the quintessential White Arrows track, a mix of pure rock and sandy, sunny good vibes. Their debut EP, Hearts & Lungs, is set for a late August release. This oughta be good!

Generationals – Con Law

Just discovered Con Law, a great pop record from NOLA’s Generationals.  Stream some tracks from the new record above and buy it here.  I recommend “When They Fight, They Fight”.  Enjoy!

The Deadly Syndrome – “I Hope I Become A Ghost”

I just watched World’s Greatest Dad a couple nights ago. If you haven’t seen it, you should check it out. It’s a twisted, dark comedy about a father who loses his son to a freak accident and decides to ghostwrite a suicide note to avoid embarrassment. There’s a scene in the movie with a shortened version of The Deadly Syndrome’s “I Hope I Become A Ghost,” and since watching it I’ve had the song on repeat in my head. I had never heard of the band before, they’ve got a really catchy and intriguing sound. Hear the song on the movie’s soundtrack, or pick up a copy of their ‘07 album The Ortolan.

The Shock! – In Silence (Video)

Here’s a really cool video from Norway’s The Shock! for their newest single “In Silence”. I’m especially fond of the opening sequences with the children playing cowboys and indians, it’s very Where The Wild Things Are-esque minus the monsters of course. Very well produced and directed video, and the song reminds me a lot of The Killers, which isn’t entirely a bad thing. Enjoy!

Arcade Fire: New Album Teaser Tracks

A. The Suburbs

AA. Month of May

Arcade Fire has presumably completed their third record and plan on releasing it later this summer. And so they have put out this nifty little widget that contains two teaser tracks, “The Suburbs” and “Month of May”. This widget is kick ass by the way, I think you’ll enjoy it as much as the two songs. I know I did.

Sugar Army – The Parallels Amongst Ourselves

Now let’s rock it! Sugar Army’s latest, The Parallels Amongst Ourselves, is a dark, intense, riff-heavy work of art. Each song stands on its own two feet, but work wonderfully together as an entire album. I can’t quite put my finger on their sound. Think Queens of The Stone Age meets Hot Hot Heat. Pick up your copy here!

Reno Bo – Happenings And Other Things

There is no other way to describe Nashville’s Reno Bo but as unadulterated rock n’ roll – with classic guitar riffs and vocals sometimes soothing, sometimes gruff (think classic rock meets Dave Grohl). His debut album Happenings and Other Things features 11 catchy tracks suitable for any rock n’ roll junkie. On April 20th he’ll be releasing a music video for the first single off the album, “There’s a Light”, which he drew and animated himself. We had the chance to get a sneak peak at this, and trust me, it is definitely worth checking out.
