Stream the new track from indie darlings The Shins. “Simple Song”, off their upcoming album “Port of Morrow”, is an instant gem and proves that singer/writer James Mercer still has what it takes to deliver unique, quirky, and delicious indie-pop. Enjoy!
When Josh Halpern isn’t paradiddlin’ around the drumkit for Marmalakes, you can find him keepin’ the beat for Final Exam, another killer ATX 3-piece, set to release their self-titled LP November 10th. The LP’s loaded with jammy, 90s-esque altrock goodness. Stream it here & be sure to check out the release show November 10th with Little Lo & The Eastern Sea @Cheer Up Charlie’s, Austin TX.
Oh, the pleasure of stumbling on brand new, outstanding and unfairly unknown music gems. And sharing it with you : ladies and gentlemen, meet The Teen Velvettes, a.k.a. Michael Cotter from Brighton, UK. “50’s inspired” wouldn’t do any justice to his collection of rockabilly, swinging surf-pop jams : each one of them oozes the spirit of a decade made of bad boys in white tees and leather jackets, college girls in socks and poodle skirts, jukebox diners, pin-up posters, chevys and fords, and, of course, rock’n'roll. See for yourself and give him a first listen below, and check out his soundcloud page for more. No words on a Teen Velvettes release anytime soon, but let’s hope for it, because this is too good not to be pressed on vinyl someday, old-timer style.

Here’s a sweet little jam from up-and-coming grunge rock prodigy Hobey Kuhn, aka Resident Scout. This guy’s in the wrong decade, but I don’t say that disrespectfully in the slightest. His debut album, My Greatest Sympathies, is made up of all the things I yearned to hear during the age of alt-grunge rock, back when Pearl Jam and Foo Fighters reigned supreme. Kuhn’s resurrection of the grunge is highly infectious. Here’s “Garden.”
I’ve been a big fan of Larry Ohm’s music for quite some time. He’s been flying solo over the years, crafting and perfecting his sound. Up until now, you had to be lucky enough to catch him live to hear his unique blend of jangly, motown-infused jukebox rock. Here’s his Newdust debut, with his newly recorded, full-band summer jam “Delouise, Suzzette, and Roxanne.”

Shhhh! My dear Newdusters, listen closely…can you hear it? It’s the not too distant sound of the ice cream truck around the block, the sizzle of burgers and franks on the grill, and the splash of that flawless cannonball I totally just nailed. Summer’s just around the river bend, and unouomedude’s latest 7″ Frequency is just in time! With its easy breezy, slightly distorted guitar riffs and unbelievably catchy melody, this will be without a doubt the feel good tune of Summer ‘11.
Check out unoumedude’s Soundcloud for more great Summer tunes and watch for Frequency’s digital release April 19th on Old Flame Records.
