Resident Scout – Garden

Resident Scout Garden

Here’s a sweet little jam from up-and-coming grunge rock prodigy Hobey Kuhn, aka Resident Scout. This guy’s in the wrong decade, but I don’t say that disrespectfully in the slightest. His debut album, My Greatest Sympathies, is made up of all the things I yearned to hear during the age of alt-grunge rock, back when Pearl Jam and Foo Fighters reigned supreme. Kuhn’s resurrection of the grunge is highly infectious. Here’s “Garden.”

Larry Ohms – Delouise, Suzzette, and Roxanne

Larry Ohms Delouise, Suzzette, and Roxanne

I’ve been a big fan of Larry Ohm’s music for quite some time. He’s been flying solo over the years, crafting and perfecting his sound. Up until now, you had to be lucky enough to catch him live to hear his unique blend of jangly, motown-infused jukebox rock. Here’s his Newdust debut, with his newly recorded, full-band summer jam “Delouise, Suzzette, and Roxanne.”

unouomedude – Frequency

unouomedude Frequency

Shhhh! My dear Newdusters, listen closely…can you hear it? It’s the not too distant sound of the ice cream truck around the block, the sizzle of burgers and franks on the grill, and the splash of that flawless cannonball I totally just nailed. Summer’s just around the river bend, and unouomedude’s latest 7″ Frequency is just in time! With its easy breezy, slightly distorted guitar riffs and unbelievably catchy melody, this will be without a doubt the feel good tune of Summer ‘11.

Check out unoumedude’s Soundcloud for more great Summer tunes and watch for Frequency’s digital release April 19th on Old Flame Records.

The Strokes – “Under Cover of Darkness”

The Strokes Under Cover of Darkness

Like many many of you, my teenage years were very much defined by The Strokes. Their new song, “Under Cover of Darkness”, is everywhere at this point so I am not writing under the pretense of giving you hungry blog readers something you haven’t heard. Rather, I want to talk about a feeling… a sentiment… the powerful nostalgia that The Strokes always bring to the table. Few bands can instantly evoke this kind of pure feeling, but those who do have that ability can impact generations. I didn’t really care for this song at first, but after talking it over with a few friends it began to wash over me. Jean jacketsCamaros… stealing beer from your older brother’s friends… finding the cutest blonde at the party to talk about which Smiths record to play after Iggy Pop has run out. The feeling that you are moving on yet leaving something behind. The Strokes are great yes because they look cool and they are great musicians, but more importantly they are great because they take you somewhere. Don’t be too hard on them kids… a band like this doesn’t happen that often. The new album drops March 22. Can’t wait.

Deer Tick – Christmas All Summer Long

Deer Tick Christmas All Summer Long

In the true spirit of Christmas (partying) check out Deer Tick’s very rock n’ roll tune, “Christmas All Summer Long”. It sounds like Iggy Pop got really really drunk on egg nog, stumbled into a college frat house, and through divine inspiration wrote a two and half minute barn burner. You can get the Holy Sh*t It’s Christmas EP here. Merry Christmas Eve!

Smith Westerns – “Weekend” (video)

Smith Westerns give us a taste of their upcoming sophomore album, Dye It Blonde, with their first single “Weekend.” And the video for the single is exactly that: a glimpse into what a typical weekend looks like for the strapping young lads of Smith Westerns. The video may also cause a sudden craving for cheese fries and nachos, which may or may not have been intentional. Dye It Blonde is set to release January 18th on Fat Possum Records, so check it out!
