Not our usual thing… but for those of you who are into producer RJD2, I have a sweet and funky track from his latest project. Icebird, teams RJD2 up with the very talented Aaron Livingston to deliver a very laid back pop record, “An Abandoned Lullaby”. The record combines elements of psychadelic, soul and alt-rock. A little different than RJD2’s usual, hip electronic stuff. If you are in DC check ‘em out at 930 Club this Wendesday October 12 (tickets.)

Video from The Stepkids featuring one of my favorite comedians (Wyatt Cynac). This song is as breezy as it is catchy. Channeling the 70’s AM radio jams we all love (think Steely Dan meets Sly and The Family Stone.) If you ever get a chance to see these guys live, do it. Their performance is full of funky beats, lush harmonies, and a spectacularly psychadelic light show. Check out tour dates and other info here. Enjoy!

I’ve been digging minimalist, lo-fi daydream pop lately, and England’s Louis Jones, a.k.a. Spectrals, has whet my aural appetite with his debut EP on Moshi Moshi Records entitled Spectrals Extended Play. “Peppermint,” will give you a good idea of what to expect from the eight-track record—groovy doo-wop guitar riffs, delayed, wavering vocals, and charmingly simple lyrics that linger in your head long after the album has stopped. The redheaded bloke’s freshman effort is currently available digitally, with a physical release date set for January 2011.
Another rockin’ tune from The State Department to kick off your Friday. And if you are in DC check out their show tonight (Friday, October 1) at Rock and Roll Hotel. I believe the band is playing with Middle Distance Runner and The Dance Party, so you better be there! ~

Ok so last week newdust and co got to party at Velvet Lounge in DC with Fergus & Geronimo. Afterwards we were discussing Long Walks on the Beach’s cover of of the pop jam “Got My Mind Set On You”. I had never really liked that song, but the F&G bros defended it. I fought with myself over it for about a week. Going back and forth. Love and hate. Eventually I gave in. Especially after hearing James Ray’s original version of the song. Enjoy!

Newdust pals Lightfoot have been very busy recording and collaborating. The band just self-released their EP People (Who Throw Kisses) Are Hopelessly Lazy. You can get the EP here. Check out the folk/country jam “Beaster”. These songs are sad and filled with heartbreak but I hear Lightfoot is turning the page on that. The band is headed to the studio soon with the intent of taking their sound in a new direction. So… stay tuned kids!
Also, check out their interesting collaboration and remix with Blithe Field on the track “Will Uncoil When”. Can’t wait to hear more guys. Keep it up!

Greatness– the first word that popped into my head when I heard this catchy, rhythmic, soul-pop tune from FpodBpod. Sean Olmstead is the man responsible, the head of FpodBpod, who’s blend of pop, rock, and psychedelia is quite infectious. From their latest album The Girls, “Mama Fell Asleep” centers around some fantastic guitar work that would slap a huge grin on Walter Becker’s mug, and quirky lyrics reminiscent of my favorite band from the 60s.
