I’ve been on a Spoon kick since their latest release Transference came out last month. So naturally I decided to watch “Stranger Than Fiction” to bask in the glory of its soundtrack, consisting mainly of Spoon songs. One song in particular always tickles my Spoon bone, and that’s “The Book I Write” that plays during end credits……….. Long live Spoon!

So the new Spoon album has been out now for about two weeks, and I have yet to listen to it. Shame on me for being both a dedicated Spoon fan for nearly a decade now, and an avid member of the indie music community for not being all over this when it came out. But I have come to my senses and have just purchased the album (you can do so as well on the band’s merch site). I did some YouTube searching to see what live footage has been thrown up so far, and I came across this excellent live recording of “The Mystery Zone” from their performance on Santa Monica, California’s KCRW. The performance aired on January 20th as a part of the station’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic” show program. You can watch the entire performance on the station’s website.
Spoon announced “Written In Reverse” as the first single off their upcoming LP, Transference, set to release January 19th. So far only live versions of the song have been scattered across the web (I found this one on Stereogum, who found it on you aint no picasso, who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors last night). The mix is a little rough on this live version, but you can look forward to the official digital release of this song on December 1st.

In thinking about the end of this year coming up in a month or so, I decided to go through my music collection. I came across the “Dark Was the Night” CD, which features a lot of artists teaming up. These include: Andrew Bird, Bon Iver, The Books featuring Jose Gonzalez, Cat Power and Dirty Delta Blues, The Decemberists, Dirty Projectors + David Byrne, Feist, Grizzly Bear, Iron & Wine, The National, The New Pornographers, Dave Sitek (TV On The Radio), Spoon, Sufjan Stevens, Yeasayer, and Yo La Tengo, to name a few.
One of my favorite tracks from the CD is Yeasayer’s “Tightrope.” It fits in very nicely with the rest of the CD and powerfully exemplifies their strong musical talent. The Brooklyn-based experimental group focuses heavily on their rhythms in this song, which is complimented by breath taking vocals. The compilation was released by 4AD Recordings and is definitely one of the best works produced from 2009.

Britt Daniel and crew announced their next LP a few days ago, titled Transference, set to release January 26th. This is an album that was untouched by a producer or any other big wig of the sort, so as Britt himself puts it, Transference is “pure Spoon. For better or worse and all of it.” If this news alone isn’t enough to get you excited, check out the teaser video above and imagine what the rest of that song is going to sound like.
The first four albums in the Spoon discography, music that most of us have grown extremely attached to over the last decade, will be available for download worldwide in high-quality FLAC format on September 29th. And once you’ve added those to your collection, you might as well swing by your favorite record store and grab them on vinyl if you don’t already own them. Here are two Spoon classics off “Soft Effects” and “Girls Can Tell”, and you can head over to Spoon’s website for more free downloads.
