Vampire Weekend – Giving up the Gun (Video)

Fantastic video for Vampire Weekend’s song “Giving Up the Gun” directed by the Malloy Bros.  Includes an epic tennis match featuring Jake Gylenahall, a Jonas brother, Lil’ Jon, the RZA and more!  Plus, slow… motion… enjoy!

Foreign Born remix by Rostam Batmanglij

Foreign Born remix by Rostam Batmanglij Foreign Born remix by Rostam Batmanglij

I can’t get enough of this remix by Rostam Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend.  The auto-tune, the filters, the reverb, the drums… its great.  To be honest, I heard “Early Warnings” about a year ago and I am embarrassed to say it didn’t stick with me.  Alas, I have come around and this is one of those remixes that makes you like the original song even more.  If you like the style of the guys in Vampire Weekend you will like Foreign Born.  It is catchy, sincere, and damn good.  Check out their album Person to Person on Secretly Canadian.  Enjoy!

PS: Check out the video for “Early Warnings” HERE. And if you are in DC they are coming to DC9 on March 14th.  Tickets HERE.

Grooveshark, Vampire Weekend – Run

Grooveshark, Vampire Weekend Run

Recently, I was at a party and someone was using grooveshark as the source for music. If you haven’t used it yet, this site is pretty awesome. It’s like twitter met pandora and had a lovechild that grew up to be better than both of them. This is just more evidence that pretty soon it’s going to be weird to own physical copies of music.

I also wanted to point out that the Vampire Weekend CD, is releasing in 4 days. There are listening parties happening all over the country, and I went to one last night in Chicago. “Run” is one of my favorite tracks. Overall, this album is easily going to be one of the best of 2010.

Vampire Weekend – Cousins

Vampire Weekend is getting closer to releasing their well-anticipated album, “Contra.” Earlier, I posted a track they released titled “Horchata.” This video for “Cousins,” builds upon that and gives just a little more insight into what to expect from their new album. As always with Vampire Weekend, the song is quite catchy. Unfortunately, they didn’t release the track to download. The video is very playful and simple; I think it’s the most fun anyone can have in an alley way of New York. I am really looking forward for the album to be released, January just can’t come soon enough.

Vampire Weekend – Horchata

Vampire Weekend Horchata

Some of you may have heard that Vampire Weekend is set to release their second CD, “Contra,” on January 12, 2010. In preparation for this, the group has uploaded the track, “Horchata,” to their website for streaming and downloading. I find the track similar to musical styles found on the group’s self-titled CD. They are keeping within the catchy style of preppy, joyful, afro-pop inspired indie-rock that they created. However, this time, they have expanded their horizons out of the Northeast region of the United States. It will be interesting to see just how far Vampire Weekend will take us.

Discovery – LP (Vmpr Wknd + Ra Ra Riot + Auto Tune)

Discovery LP (Vmpr Wknd + Ra Ra Riot + Auto Tune)There are many things that can make one’s summer day better, an ice cold Yoohoo, a Mexican beer with a lime, night swimming etc. This electro pop album from Wes Miles of Ra Ra Riot, and Rostam Batmanglij of Vampire weekend is no exception. Discovery’s LP (XL Recordings) is  a record that, it seems to me, has no more ambitions then to conquer summer 2009.   There are many moments of sugary pop greatness on this record including the tracks “Orange Shirt” and “Swing Tree”.  Though, I am not sure how I feel about hearing Discovery cover the Jackson 5 classic “I Want You Back”. Even in all its auto-tune synth pop glory it still pales in comparison to the Motown classic.  Also, hearing Ezra Koenig, singer and front man of Vampire Weekend, in full auto-tune on the track “Carby” is novelty enough to give this record a chance.  This album takes the strengths of both members indie pop groups and throws in the mix many late nights in Brooklyn listening to Daft Punk’s Alive.  The best criticism I can illuminate is that this whole record can seem gimmicky and at times phoned in.  I will also happily admit that my first instinct, because this is from the boys in Vampire Weekend and Ra Ra Riot, was that I have no choice but to denounce it as mediocre and disposable.  My opinion is that this record is just too delicious not to consume in large amounts, and I am fairly certain that this is what these New York hipsters were going for.  This is going to be the coolest thing since sliced bread this summer and I suggest that come July 7th, you enjoy every minute of it.
